AGRICULTURAL CAREERS The following list is a short glossary of Agricultural related careers with a short description of each. While it is by no means inclusive, it will give you a general sense of the variety and scope of available career paths:
Agribusiness Management: Focuses on the managerial functions performed by organizations throughout the food system. Sample job titles include Commodity trader, Ag production specialist, Farm Owner and manager and wholesale/retail buyer. Companies in this area include Seneca Foods, Ralston Purina, and Dow Elanco.
Agricultural and Natural Resources Communications: Focuses on careers in journalism, public relations, and advertising/marketing. Sample job titles include Marketing Manager, District Sales Reps and Account Manager. Companies that hire for these positions are Upjohn, Co. Michigan Milk Producers, National Dairy Council.
Building Construction Management: Focuses on Land development and structural buildings. Sample Job Titles include Project manager, Controller, Purchasing Agent, Land developer, and Real Estate Appraiser. Companies who hire for these positions include, Turner Construction, Pulte Homes, and General Motors Corp.
Agriscience: Provides a foundation for careers in agriculture and natural resources industries Sample Job titles include Agriscience Educator, Extension Educator, Farmer, and Human Resource Director. Companies who hire these positions include John Deere.
Resource Development and Management: Focuses on policy analysis, planning, evaluation, budgeting, and program management. Sample Job titles include Environmental Analyst, Environmental Planner, Solid Waste Coordinator, and Economic Development Specialist. Companies who hire for these positions include Cooperative Extension Service, National Park Service and Government and Lobbying organizations.
Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Resources: Focuses on planning and managing programs, areas, and facilities that are designed to meet people’s leisure needs and enhance quality of life. Sample Job titles include, Park Ranger, Environmental Educator, Travel and Convention Planner, and Tourism Consultant. Companies who hire for these positions include Hilton and Marriott, YMCA and Disney Corp.
Packaging: Focusing on food packaging, health care and pharmaceutical packaging and industrial packaging. Sample Job titles include Packaging Engineer, Quality Control Coordinator, and Package Designer. Companies who hire for these positions include Coca-Cola, Corp. Hershey Foods and IBM.
Horticulture: Focuses on the science and art concerned with culture, marketing, and utilization of high value, intensively cultivated fruits, flowers, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Sample job titles include Retail Manager, Landscape Designer, Florist, and Nursery positions. Companies who hire these people include Gerber, Ball Corporation and Pan American Seed.
Forestry: Focuses on the science and art of managing natural resources that occur on forest lands. Sample Job titles include Forester, Forest Ranger, Arborist, Naturalist, and Timber Buyer. Companies who hire for these positions include The Meade Corp., and USDA Forest Service.
Food Science: Focuses on the development of new foods, investigation of new production and processing methods, and research ways to insure a safe, nutritious, and economical food supply. Sample Job titles include, Food Technician, Lab Technician, and Food Chemist. Companies who hire these positions include Kraft/General Foods, Kellogg Company, and General Mills.
Fisheries and Wildlife: Focuses on environmental management, conservation, and wildlife ecology and management.
